With the right furniture and accessories, you can extend the square footage of your home during spring, summer, and fall. The key is to define the space on your patio, deck or porch. By doing so, you signal to your family and friends that the outdoors is an extension of your home.
As is the case inside your home, one of the best ways to define your space is with a rug. Many of the same elements you would consider when selecting a rug for your living room or family room are the same. However, there are some key differences.
To help you make the best choice possible, we’ve outlined out top three tips for how to choose the perfect outdoor rug.
Consider the Shape of Your Furniture
In the same way a fire pit draws guests together, round rugs create a focal point. This makes them a great addition to a seating area equipped with a large sectional or multiple chairs arranged in a circular pattern. On the flip side, a rectangular rug traditionally works best with a long outdoor dining table.
When selecting a rug for beneath your outdoor dining table, keep in mind you’ll want it to extend roughly two feet beyond the table’s edge on all sides. This allows guests to get in and out of their chairs on an even surface.
Consider the Pattern
Outdoor rugs come in a multitude of patterns and colors. This can be a good way to breathe a little color and life into your space without breaking the bank. Consider a pattern that complements your existing furniture. To make the rug pop even more, you might pair it with a few pillows from the same color palette.
Consider the Material
An outdoor rug needs to not only stand up to the normal wear and tear of the family, it needs to stand up to the elements. Make sure to carefully consider the material of your new outdoor rug. Ideally, you’ll want to select something made from tightly woven synthetics. These stand up to Mother Nature, while still looking beautiful. One of our favorite manufacturers is Chilewich. They offer elegant designs that are crafted to last.
